Gilbert began his career in banking, and after qualifying joined ICI as a management accountant later transferring to Productivity Services. He then held several management positions in textiles and newspapers (The Scotsman) before joining BP where he worked for 22 years until retiring as Systems Division Manager. He was then invited by BP to work as a Business Adviser with Enterprise Trusts under BP sponsorship.

For several years he has assisted Scottish Innovation, firstly in the development and presentation of the Patent Office's Patent Training Package and latterly in the admin. and judging of the John Logie Baird Awards for Innovation. Gilbert covers Fife and Lanarkshire area.
